The Man Behind the Movement

Jim Yates | Founder, The EmpowrMen Movement™
Health Equity Consultant | Speaker | International Author Multiple Sclerosis Advocate ...

Jim E. Yates, Jr. is an international author, speaker, health equity consultant, and multiple sclerosis advocate whose work bridges lived experience, mental health, and systems change to help individuals and communities thrive. Raised in inner-city South Bend, Indiana, Jim’s journey through adversity, trauma, and resilience shaped more than his story. It shaped his perspective, his purpose, and his commitment to helping individuals and communities navigate emotional wellness, chronic illness, and personal growth. That commitment has been reinforced through more than a decade of work across human services, nonprofit leadership, and community advocacy. Jim holds a Bachelor’s degree and a Master’s degree in Human Services with a concentration in Family and Community Services, and is currently pursuing a Master of Education in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. His training is not simply academic. It reflects a deepening responsibility to engage mental health as a critical, real-world issue that demands culturally grounded, practical, and accessible approaches to care.In 2014, Jim founded what would later grow into The EmpowrMen Movement™, a community initiative created to address the emotional, mental, and spiritual wellbeing of men, particularly Black men who are often expected to carry life’s weight without space to process it. Through initiatives such as The Brotherhood Brunch and Unfiltered: The Bruthas Roundtable Experience, the movement creates intentional spaces for honest dialogue, accountability, and growth without pressure or performance. In 2023, Jim was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, an experience that did not simply shift his path, but redefined it. Rather than viewing the diagnosis as something happening to him, Jim began to see it as something he walks alongside. This journey has become a partnership with his reality, one that requires adjustment, intention, and grace. His advocacy is shaped not only by navigating healthcare systems, but by confronting the lived realities of bias, gender expectations, social determinants of health, and the gaps in community support that many individuals face.Through this lens, Jim has become an active community educator and nationally engaged patient advocate, contributing to initiatives with organizations such as Novartis, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the Accelerated Cure Project through the iConquerMS RIDE Council, the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America, MS Views and News, and the Pro Player Foundation through rEECH on the Road. His work centers on ensuring that patient voice is not only heard, but meaningfully integrated into education, engagement, and research. As his work evolved, so did the ways he engages community. In 2025, Jim expanded The EmpowrMen Movement™ to include culturally grounded, message-driven apparel designed to affirm identity, spark conversation, and challenge narratives around mental wellness and emotional strength among Black men.In 2026, he founded Echelon Impact Consulting, a natural extension of his work, where he partners with organizations seeking to strengthen patient engagement, community trust, and health equity initiatives. His approach ensures that programs and policies reflect the realities of the communities they are designed to serve.Jim is the author of Mastering Life with MS (2023), Rooted Heights (2024), and Mastering Life with Multiple Sclerosis: The Mindset, Systems, and Strength to Walk Alongside MS (2026). His books explore resilience, identity, mental wellness, and the lived experience of navigating life’s challenges, reaching readers in multiple countries and contributing to conversations around health, hope, and adaptation across an international audience. As a husband of 15 years and father of four, his work is grounded in the belief that meaningful change happens when lived experience, community voice, and systems leadership come together.
